A Brand New Evil

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Assassinate
Boss: Azuma Shiunsai

You begin the level in a huge room inside an European Castle. Go straight on and leave the chamber through the exit in front of you. Keep moving forward through the next chamber. There are stairs on the right and an exit in front of you. Ignore the stairs. You should be able to see some tables in the next chamber. Beware since there is a woman walking around the tables in a clockwise direction. Whilst she is walking on the one side of the tables, you move on through the other side. The exit of the chamber is on the right, just after the fireplace.

After you enter the next chamber, move near the wall on the left. You will see stairs, and some suits of armour just beyond. Be cautious since the last suit of armour on the left is actually an alive knight with a sword! Surprise him; instead of letting him surprise you. After taking him out, leave the chamber through the exit on the right. Cross the next chamber and wait for a while along the wall on the right of the exit. The next chamber is actually a huge abyss surrounded by ledges. A knight armed with sword will come along from in front and will take a left turn just before the door, continuing to walk ahead to the right. Once he returns and heads away from you take him out, you must keep in mind that the place is dangerous and so you must be careful not to fall in the abyss whilst killing him.

After he is dead, turn around and head left along the ledge until you reach the exit of the chamber. At the exit use stealth to position yourself against the wall. The next chamber is in a lower level. There is a concealed pitfall just after the entrance, also in the distance you will see a stone statue and a woman in front of it looking in your direction. Wait for her to begin walking, and enter the chamber performing a jump in order to avoid the pitfall. Now, go on the left, following the woman. After a while she will take a left turn. Leave the chamber through the exit on the right. Take this route and then the passageway left. In the next chamber there is a knight with a halberd patrolling along the wall to the left of the door. Take him out whilst he is with his back or right side towards you.

Now, cross the chamber until you reach the fence at the end of it. From here you will see a platform in the middle of a water area. Shiunsai is waiting for you there. The bridge leading to the platform is in the opposite side. The best thing to do is grapple on to one of the statutes and then drop down to Shiunsai. This is the best way to stealth-kill him and avoid challenging him in a swordfight. Good luck!

A Moonless Night

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Assassinate, Stealth Required
Boss: Garan

You begin the level standing on a wall. Turn around and jump to the next wall which was behind you. Keep running along it until it bends right, carefully continue on. When you reach the end, jump over to the next wall on the left. Be careful not to be spotted by the thief armed with a bow who patrols below.

At an appropriate time take him out, and then immediately jump on to the house. Beyond you there is another house – make a big jump, doing your best to reach the edge of the house, and crouch. On the other side there is a vigilante patrolling. Eliminate him and go over the wooden platform in front of you. Ahead of you is a series of platforms with a well between them.

Take the left one, continuing along the null space, make a further two jumps over another platform and onto a small house. Crouch upon the house immediately and behold – soon you’ll see Garan walking around another house near in front of you.

Try to find a good opportunity to assassinate him; or wait for him to come as closer as possible, then just throw a shuriken in the distance in order to make him stop and look at the direction where the shuriken has hit. Then just drop down, go behind him, and wait for him to return to “?” mode. Now slash him quickly. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Ayame

Ayame Birth Name : Omon
Ninja Name : Ayame
Age : 21
Gender : Female
Weapon : 2 Short Swords
Role : Azuma Ninja

Biography

7 years have passed since Ayame lost her master Azuma Shiunsai, Clan brother and love Tatsumaru during the events of Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins. She has matured a lot and improved her skills. Her fighting style is a lot quicker and smoother than Rikimaru’s. She is tough, killing her enemies cold blooded without the sign of any doubt or hesitation, though she knows feelings like love, sadness and desperation. Her sarcasm is as feared as her sharp blades.

Ayame was the last student chosen by Master Shiunsai, by now dead leader of the Azuma Ninja Clan. Blessed with raw talent but a bad attitude. Curious and willing to learn new techniques , she was never patient enough to fully master one. It is told during the Warring States period, Shiunsai travelled to Kyoto, but Kyoto lay in ruins because warring armies fought for the ownership of the town. He saw a young girl on the riverbank watching corpses float by. It was a strange sensation for Shiunsai to see a young girl in the midst of all that desolation. Although he searched for the girl’s parents, he could not find them. The girl herself appeared to be in shock. She knew her name, and her age, but that was all. The thought of leaving her there to fend for herself didn’t make Shiunsai very proud, but what would he do with a young girl? He couldn’t train her to be a female ninja, that much was clear. Shiunsai was not part of a large and well-established ninja organisation like the Iga Ninja. As a lone wolf, he didn’t have the knowledge or ressources to train a kunoichi (female ninja). What did Shiunsai know of the ways of love? What could he teach a girl about seduction or hypnotism? As he prepared to turn his back on the young girl clutching at his sleeve, Shiunsai thought he detected in her the makings of a ninja. He decided to take her home after all. He raised her the only way he knew — as a regular ninja like Tatsukichi (Tatsumaru’s child name). Judged on her natural abilities alone, Omon was probably the most talented of Shiunsai’s three pupils. Despite her late start and her tender age, Omon was initiated into the circle of ninja at almost the same time as Rikimaru, when she was only 14. As a ninja, Omon would be known as Ayame. Ayame has developed a strong relationship with Kiku , the daughter of Lord Gohda . After the death of Kiku’s mother Lady Kei, Ayame became sort of an older sister for Kiku. Ayame will protect Kiku at any cost from any harm.

Demon Mountain

Rikimaru heads for the fortress on Mount Usuba to unravel the mystery of the demons and free their hostages.

Enemies: 19 (+ 2 wolves, 1 bear)
Max Score: 745
Ninja Item: Poison Rice

Turn around and cross the shallow river near the wooden dam. In the next enclosure is a demon sword ninja (1). To your right is a demon bow ninja (2) who rotates on the spot. Return to your first victim and grapple up to the cliff. In the hut above you is a sleeping scythe demon ninja(3). Return to your second killing and move along the wall cautiously by the waterfall. You will discover a demon sword ninja (4) patrolling that area.

Return to the point where you began the mission and grapple up the first part of the cliff on your right. On the second ledge is a demon scythe ninja (5). Be careful on your approach as this enemy might spot you! Work your way further to the cliff top guarded by a demon bow ninja (6) positioned near to the bridge. Move on to the very beginning of the bridge. To the right patrols a sword demon ninja (7). He is best taken out by jumping to a series of ledges beneath the bridge and jumping out at an appropriate time. Once he’s done away with grapple up on to the ledge to the right. Here is your next enemy – a scythe demon ninja (8).

Grapple up the on to the pillars in the distance – time for some extreme jumping! Head north and get upon the highest column. A bear and enemy patrols beneath but we will come back for these later. Upon the highest pillar you should be able to jump to a ledge to your left. Though be careful because a sword demon ninja (9) patrols this area near the hut. Be careful when killing this enemy as you or its body may get the attention of a scythe demon ninja on the platform above. You can either drag the body of the ledge or just drop back down the side of the ledge yourself and get back up once the enemy has returned to ? mode. From here you can go fight Kamadoma, but if you want all the enemies leave that scythe ninja alone for the time being. Move past the hut and forward towards a staircase style of ledges. Jump across and kill the bow demon ninja (10).

The bridge beneath you is patrolled by a demon bow ninja (11). From the bridge super jump left towards a golden tree. Past this tree the path bends left. This area is guarded by a demon sword ninja (12). Continue down the curving path and wipe out the wolf (W1). Continue onwards until you discover a ledged area guarded by a demon bow ninja (13). Beneath you in the gully be sure to pick up another scattered item: poison rice.

Pass through a tunnel to find a scythe demon ninja (14) on a ledge above you. Drop of the ledge and head towards the river. Your ki should soon pick up on a scythe demon ninja (15) patrolling the area. On the ledge to the left off the hut is another enemy, a sword demon ninja (16). Head north back to the bridge near enemy 11 beneath which lies a sword demon ninja (17). Head back to the river – its bear stalking time!

To the east of the river are those columns you were jumping earlier. Stealthfully move between these two columns to kill both the bear (B1) and a sword demon ninja (18). Take your time with these two kills as one kill can often alert the other. Use the pillars to your advantage to hide if someone thinks they’ve spotted something. Head back west to the source of the river and grapple up to the left. Head to the left grappling to the platform in the distance. This takes you back to near the area with the un-numbered enemy we left alone. Take out this scythe ninja (19) and the wolf under the hut (W2) and enter the building for a confrontation with the demon ninja, Kamadoma.

Boss: Kamadoma
Health: 200

The only time Kamadoma causes problems is if he pins you up against a wall. Keep on your toes blocking all his attacks and then hit him with your combo. Watch out for an occasional grenade. Use items as required.

Depths Of Despair

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Seek Out
Boss: Genbu

You begin the level inside a cavern. Stay on the small platform and turn around. Pass through the two wooden crates and drop to the ground below, just near the water. Go ahead past the two cells, avoiding the gaze of the innocent. Ahead of you on the platform a crow ninja armed with sword is patrolling. Take him out when he is with his back or sides towards you.

Leave the area through the exit on the right. Now use your grappling hook to climb the ledge just in front of the exit. Keep moving along the ledge cautiously until it makes a left turn. Beware just after the turn there is a fence and a crow ninja patrolling just along the fence. Eliminate him, retreat first if necessary, or use the platform to hang off.

Now, you should see Genbu walking around in the next room in a lower level. be careful not to jump directly on the ground beyond the wall – there is a concealed switch which will activate a spear-trap, stabbing the ill person in a cell in the distance and thus alerting Genbu. Perform a big jump instead, after waiting for the right moment to strike.

After dispatching Genbu run to the right until you reach a very small water area. Now, use your grappling hook to climb the ledge on the left side of the passageway, just above you. From here you’ll see Shiunsai in the next area. Go to him. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Emancipation

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Assassinate
Boss: Boron

The village tileset and an assassinate mission make for a very easy combination. With no infinity high wall, finding Boron is quite simple. Turn around and head forward to the null-space. Keep moving along it to the left. Continue on until you reach a small brook, pass it, and proceed until you reach the corner of the map. Continue moving to the left, still along the null-space.

After a while you’ll reach another small brook. Beyond it you’ll see wooden fence. Beware – there is a village girl walking around near to the left; don’t let her spot you if you want to prove your stealth skills. After you pass the brook, climb the fence and then drop down the other side.

In the distance you’ll see some water, some trees, and Boron the moron between them. There are several pitfalls concealed with trapdoors there – you’ll notice them because the ground around them is lighter. Now, unsheathe your weapon and then grapple onto the closest tree (with red leaves), and using stealth position over it. Be careful though – Boron is very close. Now all you have to do is to wait for the right opportunity, to jump down avoiding any trapdoors, and to be fast in slashing him in his back.

For more challenge eliminate some guards first or face Boron in a head-to-head duel. Good luck!

How can I play custom missions ?
Tenchu 2 has a mission editor which allows you to play and create custom missions.

How do I unlock all the tilesets ?
You unlock more tilesets as you complete more of the game. The tilesets can also be unlocked by using a cheat which can be found on the cheats page.
Note: The only was you can unlock the Office tileset is by using a separate cheat.

How do I get a trap to work ?
For a trap to work you need to place it in conjunction with a switch.
For multi-trap areas a switch usually operates a trap that is positioned in-line with itself, if not it takes the nearest available trap.

How do I get a protect mission to work ?
In order for a protect mission to work you must have specified a path leading Gohda to Sekiya.
Gohda will then follow your character if in “?” mode. Your character must stay near to Gohda if he is to continue his path. He will stop and remain if you go too far ahead or different status modes arise.

Where can I download missions ?
Please read here.

How do I get missions to and from my playstation ?
There are several pieces of hardware that can help transfer saved missions to and from your playstation and personal computer.
The most popular, by far, is Interact’s DexDrive.

Interact's DexDrive

Where can I buy a DexDrive ?
It is becoming increasingly difficult to get hold of DexDrives, but here is a place you could try:eBay

I don’t own a dexdrive. What are the alternatives ?
If you don’t own a Dexdrive or transferring device there are alternatives. You can play and make your own missions by using a playstation emulator. The three most popular are:

Bleem!
ePSXe
Connectix Virtual

I downloaded a mission but it won’t work ?
The most likely explanation is that you have downloaded the mission in the wrong format. Try downloading it again.
If the problem still arises and you are sure its not the format it could be the file is corrupt. If you think this is the case email us stating the problem and we will try to rectify the problem.

How do I convert missions ?
Converting missions into different formats is not too difficult if you follow these steps:

  1. First of all you will need a program called PSXGameEdit.
  2. Open your .GME save file and select the mission you wish to convert.
  3. Choose Select Format and choose the format you wish to change the save into. Click Yes when the warning message come up.
  4. Once that is complete you need to change the P.Code to the right. For UK the code is SLES-02452, EU SLES-02463, SP SLES-02465, US SLUS-00939 and JP SLPS-03040. Now click back on the main area where your saves are listed.
  5. You should now get a message asking you to confirm your code change. Click Yes.
  6. Well done. You have changed the format of a Tenchu 2 save.

How do I submit a mission to the search engine ?
The mission search engine has not been restored yet. Submissions can unfortunately not be accepted at this time.

Into The Enemy’s Lair

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Retrieve, Stealth Required
Boss: Toda Yoshisada

After the level begins, run ahead and bypass the first left corridor. Stop and crouch at the entrance to the next left corridor, and watch for the spearman that will show up from the far right. When he turns his back towards you, rush and take him out immediately. Be sure to do this fast, because the geisha that is in the room on the left will spot you. After you kill him, rush back and hide.

The annoying geisha will notice the guard’s corpse and will go to him. After your KI meter returns to “?”, wait for the geisha to stay with her back towards you; then kill her with either a shuriken or with a crouching hit to eliminate her immediately (it’s an evil act to do, but it’s safer for you). Then, climb the vent-like ledge that is on the left. Go along the corridor until you reach a small room below the way. Jump down and take the yellow scroll. Then, climb back and return to the place where you committed the double murder.

Next, enter the room on the left and take the red scroll that is on the right side of the weapon stand. Return to the entrance to the weapon room and wait to observe an archer on the corridor to your left. Be warned he might be alerted by your two bodies. Kill him. Next return to your pile of victims and head up the right vent-ledge. Drop down in to the tiled room and kill the spear-man.

From the entrance out observe a swordsman and only kill once he is heading left away from you. If in doubt watch his path then continue along. The corridor will make one more turn. Crouch below the stairs that are next, and wait for the spear-man ahead to stand with his back towards you. Take him out, then go back and take the way on your left. Run along until you finally reach the blue scroll. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Weapon : Hands & Feet

Onikage is not human, he is a demon and can’t be killed. Even though he is defeated in a fight and thought dead, he will soon appear again, because he has the abilitly to ressurect from the dead. His past is yet unknown and mysterious. His age difficult to determine, but he is probably a couple hundred of years old. There seems to be a link between him and the Azuma Ninja Clan. He has a special interest in Rikimaru, maybe because he sees a similarity between the two of them. His loyality to Lord Mei-Oh is very similar to Rikimaru’s loyality to Lord Gohda, with the difference that Lord Mei-Oh resembles the evil in the world and Lord Gohda the good. As Onikage is the destroyer of lives, Rikimaru is the protector of the innocent and weak, all in the name of their Lords and bound by the oaths they have sworn. Onikage watches the Azuma Ninja and Gohda territory closely and misses no chance to cause trouble. Onikage will do everything necessary to please Lord Mei-Oh. No sacrifice is too big if he can reach his goal. He is a master of disguise among other skills. The first known meeting of Onikage and the Azuma Ninja takes place in Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins. Onikage joined a group called “The Burning Dawn” who were fighting against Lord Gohda and the Azuma Ninja Clan, disguised as a man called Suzaku. The Azuma Ninja do not know Onikage and Suzaku are one and the same person.

Ranking System

At the conclusion of each mission your ninja techniques are reviewed. Your score and rank will depend on how many enemies you killed and under what circumstances. If you score a high rank some of your ninja items will be increased. Score the highest rank, Grand Master, and you will be rewarded with Grand Master items. A break down of the scoring system and ranking for Tenchu 2 is given below:

Task: Breakdown: Points:
Undetected Kills Undetected kills +20 (for each)
Detected kills Detected kills +5 (for each)
Not spotted Finishing mission +300
Spotted -30 (for each)
Innocents Innocent kills -150 (for each)

Unlike the original Tenchu there is no obvious correlation between score and rank. To achieve a Grand Master ranking on levels where the total number of enemies is less than or equal to 16 will require your ninja not to be seen. In general, for levels with 17 enemies and over a score greater than 600 will give you a Grand Master rating. Once can therefore hypothesize that for missions with more than 16 enemies the rankings follow the approximate pattern:

Score: Rank: Items:
< 100 Novice 3 of acquired items (at random)
101 <  < 200 Apprentice 4 of acquired items (at random)
201 <  < 300 Thug 5 of acquired items (at random)
301 <  < 400 Ninja 6 of acquired items (at random)
401 <  < 500 Expert Ninja 1 of each acquired
501 <  < 600 Master Ninja 2 of each acquired
 > 600 Grand Master 3 of each acquired

Rikimaru

Rikimaru Birth Name : unknown (was called Chikara as a child)
Ninja Name : Rikimaru
Age : 25
Gender : Male
Weapon : Izayoi
Role : Azume Ninja

Biography
After his master Azuma Shiunsai died and Rikimaru had avenged his death he took the role of the leader of the Azuma Ninja Clan (Azuma Shinobi Ryu sect) at the age of 18. His clan is only very small and consists of Ayame and him. As the Azuma Ninja Clan’s leader, Rikimaru wields the ancient and magical sword Izayoi, which is passed on through the generations from leader to leader. Rikimaru and his Clan are loyal servants of Lord Gohda. To protect his Lord or fulfill his orders Rikimaru would sacrifice his own life without hesitation and at the end of Tenchu: Stealth Assassins he will do so. Rikimaru is very focused on his work. He shows respect to his opponents and never underestimates them. He shows no mercy to anyone. His scar over his left eye will always remind him, not being focused, showing mercy or acting from a state of pure selflessness will always result in failure. His older Clan brother Tatsumaru, who betrayed the Azuma Ninja and killed Master Shiunsai, hurt Rikimaru’s eye. Rikimaru fought Tatsumaru, who had killed Master Shiunsai, and beat him in the fight, but as he wasn’t able to take Tatsumaru’s life with a final strike, Tatsumaru took the time while Rikimaru was undecided and attacked him, injuring Rikimar’s eye. Tatsumaru used to be Rikimaru’s role model, but by now Rikimaru has surpassed him in his spiritual and physical abilities.

Rikimaru was dedicated student, he worked constantly to improve his techniques. Many years ago, Shiunsai received an order to assassinate a particular samurai. Together with several fellow ninja , he infiltrated the home of the samurai and killed him. As he and the other ninja were preparing to leave, the dead samurai’s wife and servant discovered the ninja. The other ninja quickly dispatched the wife and servant, but as they moved to silence the baby clutched in the dead wife’s arms. Shiunsai stopped the ninja from killing the baby boy. Taking pity on the boy, Shiunsai brought the baby home with him and raised it as if it were his own flesh and blood. Shiunsai was already raising Tatsukichi (Tatsumaru) to become a ninja, and he decided that the new baby would follow the same path. After the baby had grown into a young boy and started his training as a ninja, it became apparent that he was something of a weakling. Shiunsai therefore gave him the name Chikara, which means strength. Whether or not it was this name that drove him to become stronger, or whether it was from sparring with Tatsukichi every day, no one can say. What is known is that Chikara grew to be the strongest boy in the village. He also developed into an outstanding swordsman. If he had a shortcoming, it was that he didn’t learn new techniques as fast as the other students. Slow learner or not, Chikara eventually earned a new name, Rikimaru, and a new title: ninja.

Shiunsai’s First Test

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Assasinate
Boss: Gohda Motohide

Turn around and go straight on until you reach stairs and two spear-traps located on the both sides of the stairs. Pass them and crouch immediately. There is a soldier armed with sword patrolling at the end of the room. Eliminate him. The exit is on the left – leave the room and then take the left path. You will see some stairs in the distance. Don’t go up on them, instead turn right and keep moving.

On the right there is an entrance to a room in which a geisha walking around. Ignore the room without letting the girl inside spot you. Stop in crouch position beside the lamp beyond the entrance. In the near distance there are stairs leading to a room. Inside there is a spearman patrolling. Wait for him to show up at the entrance and once he looks away head up and kill him.

At the end of the corridor onward there is a ledge on the wall. There is a geisha walking around there, so be careful. Climb the ledge and enter the next room by performing a big jump in order to avoid the hidden-pitfalls area on the other side.

Now, go to the nearest statue and climb it using your grappling hook. From here you will see Motohide walking around. Wait for him to walk away with his back towards you and jump after him. Move on & then slash him with your weapon unsheathed. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Shiunsai’s Fourth Test

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Seek Out, Stealth Required
Boss: None

After the level begins, turn around. Take the path on the left, and run until you reach a lamp. Now grab up onto the ledge on the left. Do not climb it yet, just examine the patrolling pattern of the archer on the other side of the ledge. When ready, climb and go for the guy. Descend the stairs on the right, then continue in a left direction. Beware – at the next corridor there is a swordsman patrolling; he starts from beyond the furthest column and continues on the left direction. On the right side of the corridor, there is a spear-man patrolling along the set of stairs.

When the swordsman is moving away, go for the spear-man – it is advised to observe them for a while until you are comfortable at timing your move, because to be spotted means instant death. Now, go up the stairs, from here you’ll notice a swordsman in the distance; don’t go in that direction, instead descend the stairs to the left. Continue on until you reach the end of the wooden floor, then crouch over the stairs that lead to the lower ground.

Observe the area on your left (take advantage of the KI meter as well)and kill the spear-man who is patrolling there. When ready, head back to the right and grab on to the wooden platform right below the swordsman you saw previously. Take a look at the far left above where the stairs go, and wait for the archer up there to walk away from you. Climb and immediately press the attack button to take out the swordsman. Then drop back down. If the archer is unalerted he will be next. Kill him and continue along that ledge until you see a lower area below covered with trapdoors, and a swordsman guarding in the distance. When he is with his back towards you, jump down over the trapdoors and rush ahead to avoid falling and kill him.

Now head right, then take the small corridor with the stairs on the left. Again on the left there are some more stairs, and a swordsman patrolling. Go and eliminate him, then go back and take out the other swordsman that is on the lower area. Next make your way goes down the stairs that lead lower, but beware of the spear-man who might show up there coming from the right side. Be careful, use your KI meter, and eliminate him at a good opportunity. Now all that you have to do is to go in the direction where the spear-man was patrolling, and follow the footsteps to find Shiunsai. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Shiunsai’s Second Test

Written by Komov & Chris
Objective: Protect
Boss: Gohda Motohide

The best way to deal with any protect is to eliminate all the enemies along the route first, however the level can be played without doing so for more challenge. The level begins with you placed in a small room with a corridor ahead of you. Go forward and climb the wall to your right.

Drop down into the small passageway, and then climb the next wall. Crouch immediately, and hold. You’ll see Motohide walking around. His route is not complicated, so you shouldn’t have any troubles in slashing him when you get the right opportunity. Next take the stairs that are on the right beside the lamp. You’ll see two routes – a corridor on the right, and a set of stairs directly ahead of you.

Take the stairs. Eliminate the swordsman patrolling inside the room on the left before taking the opposite path to the right. After a short while you’ll reach a huge area with a bowman patrolling beside the wall on the right. Climb the wall carefully and take him out, then drop back down and keep going until the path bends right. Follow it round and soon you’ll see Lord Gohda waiting for you.

Go close to him in order to make him notice you. Now he’ll lead you right to Sekiya Naotada. Don’t leave too much distance between yourself and Gohda or he’ll stop walking and will wait for you to return. After a long peaceful walk, you and your Lord will reach Sekiya without any obstacles or blood-shedding on the way. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Shiunsai’s Third Test

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Eliminate
Boss: Gohda Motohide

Turn around. Cross the room with the platform and continue on into the corridor. Head right until you reach where the path makes right turn and then use stealth to position yourself along the wall. Wait for the spear-man patrolling in the next part of the corridor to stand with his back towards you, then hurry & eliminate him. Go back and take the route on the right with the pitfalls. Follow the path, you’ll have to jump at least two times. In the next room there is a spear-man patrolling, take him out.

Enter the next room, on the right. On a platform towards the left ledge, just after a lamp, there is a bowman patrolling. Kill him, then head forward and take the right turn. In the next room there is a high platform and a swordsman patrolling in a anti-clockwise direction. Grapple up and then plan for the best approach. After you kill him, go to the exit of the room on the right.

Be careful, the whole next room is a pitfall area covered with trapdoors. Run through towards the right front corner very fast, and jump over the higher floor at the entrance of the next room. There is a swordsman patrolling on the right side, eliminate him carefully. Take the only exit, but be careful since there is a concealed trap located beyond the step down.

Ahead there is a corridor. Climb the ledge along the wall in front of you. In the next room down there is Motohide walking around. Unsheathe your weapon and jump down when he is vulnerable for attack, then slash him. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Silent Forest

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Eliminate
Boss: Byakko

After the level begins, turn around 180 degrees. Just ahead of you is a small hill. Go and climb it. Below on the right is a kunoichi guarding – drop down and kill her. Continue on in that direction, until you see a big stone. On the other side there is an archer patrolling. Take him out, then continue to the right passing another big stone, and move on until you reach a place which you must climb.

Be sure to either crouch or stay clinging to the ledge because between the bamboo trees there is a demon ninja patrolling. Go for him and take him out. Next jump down to the lower ground on your right, avoiding the trap concealed below. Head to the big stone, beyond the pillar, and watch for the kunoichi patrolling on the other side. Slay her, then keep moving ahead until you see a snow-covered pitfall and an entrance to another area on the left. Go to that area and eliminate the archer who is patrolling there.

Then head back to the last big stone, and go right near the water area. There is a scythe ninja patrolling on the higher ground. Take him out, be careful not to fall in the lower place on the left – there are pitfalls concealed with trapdoors. Drop back down and head left following the wall round, past your female victim. After several left turns along the wall, you’ll finally reach a sword ninja patrolling. Eliminate him, then go back along the wall until you reach the water where you were before.

Enter the water, and swim under the wall. On the other side is the place where Byakko is, walking around inside his lair. Climb up and grab the edge of the level above. From here observe Byakko and when he is walking away with his back towards you, you must go on up and slash him. Be warned it is useful to unsheathe your weapon in advance as it is sheathed after your short swim. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Tenchu, Incorporated

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Steal
Boss: Azuma Shiunsai

You begin the level in a room where is a secretary walking around a desk. It is more than likely you won’t see her because of the disappearing enemy glitch. Move cautiously forward. On the right you should see a partition. Climb it, and jump to the platform ahead of you. Beware – this is the moment when the secretary suddenly appears and will be alerted to your presence causing your ki to enter !! mode.

Ahead is a locker room and inside a sword ninja patrolling. Should the screams have alerted him wait until he returns to ? mode before taking him out. Now cross the room and find the only entrance out. Take the left turn, continue along the corridor past the two small stairs until you reach the next set of steeper stairs a fair way down the corridor on your left. Don’t go up them instead turn right. Carry on down the corridor ignoring the first room on your right. Ahead of you should be a big room in a lower level with Shiunsai patrolling, and a ledge on the right. Kill Shiunsai as he moves away and go back to climb the ledge.

Take the corridor and keep moving until you see a scythe ninja in front of you, just beyond a corner. Don’t worry he wont see you! Ahead of the enemy is an abyss. The scythe ninja should stay with either his back or his left side towards you. Take him out. Beware not to fall in the abyss whilst killing him! Now, take a look on the left. You should see the Secret Message in lower level on a very small piece of ground. Jump there carefully. Take it and then use the grappling hook to climb back.

Return to the room where you first met Shiunsai. There is another entrance out of it. Leave the room through it. Keep moving through the corridor until you finally meet Lord Gohda at the end, beyond the partition. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

Tenchu.de, Resurrected!

Welcome back everyone!  It’s been a long time, but hopefully we can begin to get the site restored to it’s former glory, as well as provide any new info since the site was hacked.  But if not, then a mere shadow of it’s former self will suffice.  Stay tuned for more news and updates.

The Demon Encampment

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Eliminate
Boss: Kamadoma

You begin the level standing upon a rock. Below you is an innocent person, but most likely you won’t see him because of the disappearing enemy glitch. Ahead of you is another rock on the right, and a path to its left. Rush ahead and take the path to the left. You’ll see a bowman guarding a rock above you. Take him out, then move on passing the big tree stump and the tree that are close to the wall.

In front of you will be another tree, and a demon ninja patrolling near the guardian deities. To your left is vast abyss area. Do not cross the bridge. Instead head left and use your ki until you pick up the scent of a scythe ninja beyond a rocky area. Your ki will still be picking up another enemy, he is just beyond through a narrow passage which cuts back on itself. Take him out, then return to the small bridge between the two towers.

Beware because the bridge collapses. After you pass it, be sure to stop on the inclined ground, as a spear trap and switch is just beyond it.. Nearby is a big stone and a sword ninja patrolling. Jump over the switch to avoid the trap and slay the guy. Then go through the entrance which leads to a water area. On the left there is a big stone, and a demon ninja on the other side of the stone. Go for him.

Then jump to the nearest platform over the water area. You have to make three more jumps until you reach a platform with a big stone. You’ll see Kamadoma over the next platform. Unsheathe your weapon, then climb the stone and crouch when Kamadoma is not watching. Now wait for a good opportunity to jump over the next platform and to slash the leader of the Demon Ninja right in time.

The Floating Temple

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Retrieve
Boss: Suzaku

You begin the level near one of the entrances to a huge temple area located by a lake. Take the path in front of you then jump on to the roofs to your right. Move along them until they make a right turn. Ahead is a small area where there is a monk (non-combatant). If you are good at stealth, you shouldn’t let the monk spot you. Now jump on the roofs to the left.

There are two areas with ponds surrounded by platforms (in the left area there is a monk also). Go to the right one – the blue scroll is right below the wall. Collect it. Jump back over the roofs and continue along to the left. When the way makes a left turn carry on forward. Move until you reach a small bridge leading out of the temple area in the right direction.

Follow this path, and when you’re on the ground, go on the left until you reach the null space. Follow it to the right until you reach the corner of the map, where the red scroll is. BE SURE TO AVOID TRAPDOORS AND MINES. Trapdoors are darker than the surrounding grass. After you pick the scroll, continue along the null space avoiding a couple of mines until you reach a water tunnel.

Be careful – there is a bowman patrolling in the corridor on the right of the water tunnel. Go in the water, and swim along the null space. Once you reach the higher ground ahead of you, climb up using the grappling hook. Then go to the big tree. There is a small shrine, a mine, and the yellow scroll between them. Go and take the scroll, but be careful not to bump into the mine. Congratulations, you have beaten the level!

The Howling Wind

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Protect
Boss: Wang Dahai

You begin the level standing on wooden platform near the shore of a lake. Go ahead until you notice Lord Gohda waiting for you not far away from the start. Behind him there is a hidden trap with switch. Anyway, don’t approach Lord Gohda yet, instead head right. Soon you’ll see some wooden boxes, and a Chinese swordsman guarding on the other side near a campfire.

Go and take him out. Continue on until you reach a big stone. Ahead you’ll see another Chinese swordsman patrolling. After you kill him, continue right. Pass one house and use stealth along the next house. Move along the wall to the left to get the opportunity to see the Chinese guard with rifle guarding on the tower.

When the guard is not looking in your direction, run to the tower, then climb it using the grappling hook. Immediately press the square button, and the guard will be finished. Drop down, and move towards the next watchtower . Up the ramp another swordsman patrols, kill him. Head left until you see some warning bells, beyond which there is a further enemy.

Jump over the bells and kill him. Ahead grapple up to series of watchtowers and you will see Sekiya. Now head back using the other route for an easy approach on Wang Dahai. Kill him. With all enemies dead protecting Gohda should now be simple! Congratulations, you succeeded!

The Secret Harbor

Rikimaru races to rescue kidnapped villagers being held at a secret harbor.

Enemies: 16 (+ 1 shark)
Max Score: 645
Ninja Item: Air Bottle

Creep along the wall to your left. Around the corner patrols your first victim – a spear pirate (1). Follow the path around until your ki picks up your next enmy – a tiger fork pirate (2). To your right above you in the distance is a rifle pirate (3). Creep slowly up and take him out.

In front of you to your right is a sword pirate (4). Slowly move around the corner to observe a spear pirate (5) patrolling the trench. Head towards the beach on the right edge of the level until you reach an area with a few trees. Be careful on the beach, mines have been placed. Take down the finale claw ninja (6) which patrols near this area.

Now continue on down the right side of the level. As you near the stone arch you will find another sword pirate (7). Pass under the arch and climb up it to the right. Here you will find a rifle pirate (8) guarding a scattered item; the air bottle. Climb down the arch to the beach and head forward. To your left patrols a female short-sword ninja.

Head away from the water in a north-east direction to where a spear pirate (10) guards a hut. Continue north to find a rifle pirate (11) on the cliffs above. In the clearing to your left patrols a tiger fork pirate (12)

Return to the hut and head south-east along the left side of the level. Just past the crate and small upturned boat you will discover a female claw ninja (13). Head right along the waters edge. In a torch lit area patrols a spear pirate (14). Head towards the ramp leading up to the boat. Guarding this route ia s rifle pirate (15). Slowly creep up the platform for a spear pirate (16) on the boat.

Check the crates for a potion. You can achieve Grand Master without killing the shark (S) but if you wish to use the following tactics… Return to the boat and head below the deck for your confrontation with Wang Xaiohai.

Boss: Wang Xaiohai
Health: 100

A real nasty boss. His multi-combo moves are both powerful and difficult to block. I would recommend taking smoke bombs, grenades and potions to assist in his defeat.

General Tips

To avoid enemies disappearing do not over populate areas with enemies and objectsTry to cover up null space (the black border) with infinity tiles.

Don’t change the mission objective during your mission creation as any enemies you have placed will be removed.

If you place new objects towards the end of your creation check you have not blocked any enemy pathways.

Points Of No Return

Characters can jump a maximum of three squares, but they can grapple an edge a distance of up to five away. Set up such a grapple point and when grappled to your character can not return from where he/she has come.

Ricochet Jumps

Have you noticed when you are next to a wall and you jump you can then jump again to flip off it? This is called a Ricochet Jump. Well you can align pillars so that you have to use this type of jump to navigate a pitfall area. The picture below shos a typical setup. To get from (A) to (B) you must flip off the far corner of the pillar.

None grapple pints

There are certain places where a grapple hook can not reach. Placing some items, such as a fence, on four high ground results in a non grapple point.
Alternatively there are places that can be grappled to but our character can not hold on to. For example using a raised Slight or Steep Incline our character can only grapple on to all edges but only hang on the one marked in red. Used in conjunction with pitfalls you can create tempting grapples that result in death.

Moonsault Jumps

This idea continues from the notion of None Grapple Points. Suppose you have ground at level 0 and a none grapple point at level 4. You can not grapple up to that level since you cannot hold on to the edge. However using either Rikimaru or Tatsumaru if you perform a moonsault jump (down, up, x) you can flip on to that level.

Walkthrough Walls

It is possible to create walls that can be walked through. To do this place two pillars diagonally together. Make the terrain on one side of the diaganol (A) lower than the other side (B). It may now be possible to pass through the wall from side (B) to (A). Once again this glitch requires a lot of tinkering to work, sometime it does and other times it doesn’t. Don’t me afraid to mess around to get this to work.

Harsh Protect

In this version of a protect mission you put characters near Gohda, but make sure that Gohda is not in their line of sight. You can achieve this by setting a path where the characters just pause looking one way.
Now if you do anything that results in characters going in to the !? mode or worse (i.e. being spotted, splashing water) all characters will draw weapons and rotate on the spot. As soon as they see Gohda they will start attacking him. Hence if you have not found him, he will die a quick death without your protection.

Scroll Pickers

In a retrieve mission it is possible for characters to pick up the scrolls. Just set a path which takes them through the scroll. If you want to be really mean let an innocent pick up the scroll, most honorable Tenchu players don’t think about hunting the innocent.

Fall In The Shadows

This is a glitch which results in being able to fall down a pitfall to the bottom and surviving, you can then explore this nothingness. Enemies can fall down too and survive to fight you in the darkness. Setting this up is pretty much trial and error but it revolves around creating an divided off area in which you place switch and trapdoors together. I don’t know if there are exact figures but try around 30 trapdoors and twice as many switches – its not an exact science.

One Way Water Passages

If you make an underwater passageway try to add a water -1 tile to the end of it. Its wide enough for your character to get out of but too narrow to return through. Hence a one-way water passage.

Closed Waterways

Use the underwater vortex to create a river or lake and use further inclined tiles so the character (if in the water) cannot grapple out. He/she then has to tread water back to an earlier part of the level where they can get out. A few well positioned bow men can help make the return more difficult.

Fence Trick

Placing a fence on top of a +4 tile allows players to look through to the other side without being able to climb over it. Great for Seek Out missions!

Treason at Gohda Castle

Rikimaru rushes to Gohda Castle when the Azuma Ninja receive word that the Gohda family, whom they have served for generations, is under attack.Enemies: 15
Max Score: 600
Ninja Item: Smoke Bomb

Begin by running through the firey corridors and up the first set of stairs. Stand to the left of the white Japanese door and smash it with your sword by attacking it. A sword soldier (1) patrols the doorway opposite. Once he has walked towards you and turned away make your move. Pass through the doorway and head right, past the stairs and to the wall by the doorway. Slowly creep around the corner and you will see a bow soldier (2). When he turns take him out.

Now head further down to the right. Keep going till you see the stairs, then step back an enemy patrols this area. If the sword soldier (3) is not there he will becoming through the door to the right soon, so be patient. When he turns back go for the kill. Don’t go up the stairs yet but take the narrow door to your right. It connects a series of small rooms. Break through the doorway to find another area with a spear soldier (4) who rotates in a fixed position. Return to the stairs and go up to the second floor. This floor is made of two interconnected loops. First choose the doorway to your right just beyond which is a bow soldier (5). Nip out and cut him down.

Continue along the corridor which bears left, minding the trapdoors. Your ki-meter should pick up another bow soldier (6) patrolling the corridor. Hide close to the wall before going for the kill. Turn to the left and navigate the second loop. Beyond the stairs going down is a sword soldier (7). Hide behind them before pounching out. The route to the left takes you back to the stairs but there is another enemy down there so head that way to take out the sword soldier (8). Return to your previous killing and continue onwards and to the right where a spear soldier (9) patrols. Watch his pattern from around the corner and pick your moment.

Continue on until the collapsed corner where there is another narrow doorway. A sword soldier (10) guards the inner door. He just rotates so should be no problem. Head down the corridor and break through another door. Head up the stairs to the third floor. Out the door turn left and pin yourself up against the wall. Around the corner are some step and a raised platform, beneath which is another useful item: The Smoke Bomb. However, before making a run for it you should take out the bow soldier (11) who is on the platform. Grapple and hang when he moves away, then the second time get up and dispose of him.

Double back the other way along the corridor – don’t be alarmed if some enemies are alerted by noises. When you get to the corner pull yourself up and slowly creep forward along the lower path in a crouched position. A bow soldier (12) should appear. If he goes into “!” mode roll backwards, otherwise just wait until he turns away; then attack.

Go around the next corner carefully and get yourself against the wall near the door. This room has two enemies but you should still go unnoticed if you are careful. The first is a sword soldier (13) who patrols the bottom; get him when his back is to you. And the second sword soldier (14) is on the platform to the left. Grapple up and let his throat taste your cold steel.

Slowly creep up the stairs to your right. Three quarters of the way up have a good look around. There is a spear soldier (15) to the right. Make him pay. Head up the stairs to the right for the confrontation with Motohide.

Boss: Motohide
Health: 120

If you keep close to Motohide he shouldn’t prove too much of a problem. At a distance he might pull his gun on you. Parry his attacks with his sword and get in with a few of your own. Don’t worry you don’t have to kill him, doing over half damage is enough to make the coward turn and flee.

Tutorial

Original author Chris B. Edited by Tenchu Checkpoint Team.

So you have finished Tenchu 2? You need a new challenge? Welcome to the world of the Tenchu mission editor. Tenchu 2’s mission editor enables you to both create and play custom made Tenchu missions. Once you have made your own missions you can put them online and share them with the Tenchu community.

Making your first mission – Getting Started

To be able to make great missions you need to familarise with the basics of mission creation. Don’t worry if your first few missions are not brilliant, it takes time and patience to make a masterpiece. Remember practise makes perfect!
To start your first creation at the main screen select Mission Editor. You are then presented with two options; Run Mission is an area where you can load up and play custom missions, Edit Missionis for new creations and editing existing missions.

Selecting Edit Mission brings you to this screen where you can either choose to a create a new mission or alternatively edit existing missions from your memory cards. Now things are about to get interesting! On the next screen you get to set the parameters for your mission. So questions you need to ask yourself are: What tileset do I wish to use? What objective do I want? Do I want stealth or a time requirement?

Enter the following parameters:

  1. Title (this is the name of your mission and can be up to 32 characters)
  2. Creator (your name goes here, up to 16 characters)
  3. Password (if you don’t want anyone else to edit your mission then enter a password)
  4. Location (choose the tileset you wish to use)

Your next choice is to choose which objective you would like for your mission. Each mission has a specific objective that the player must achieve in order to complete the level. The objectives are:

Seek Out
Find Azuma Shiunsai.
Eliminate
Eliminate every character on the board.
Protect
Locate Lord Gohda, then escort him safety to where Sekiya, his senior councilor, is waiting.
Assassinate
Assassinate the target character. No other characters matter. The target character is determined by the location setting.
Retrieve
Find the three missing scrolls. The scrolls may be hidden or in the possession of enemy characters.
Steal
Locate a secret document hidden somewhere on the level, and bring it back to Lord Gohda.

The further options you have are to choose which characters can be used for the mission. A mission can be limited to one, or open to all the three main characters. You can also add a stealth requirement, with the mission resulting in failure if you are seen, or a time limit for the level.

In this area we discuss in more detail about making your first mission. Having set up your mission parameters we are now ready to create out masterpiece. But first we must look at in detail two areas; The Terrain Editor and The Character Editor. When creating missions I always make my terrain and then position the characters afterwards. So we will look at the two in that order.

Making your first mission – The Terrain Editor

The terrain editor is used to lay out the shape of your mission. Each mission consists of a grid 32 by 32 squares. This is the area in which you can place your terrain. The red square (1) indicates the active square, this would be where any terrain selected would be placed.

Normal View compared to Wireframe View

The white square outline in the top left corner (2) is an overview of the terrain. It allows you to quickly check you character distribution. The smaller red rectangle within indicates the part of the terrain which is displayed on the screen. The key to the coloured dots is as follows:

Blue: Player
Pink: High-ranking characters
Yellow: Boss characters
Red: Low level characters and/or scrolls and secret documents
Green: Noncombatants

By pressing L1 and L2 you can scroll through all the terrain elements. These elements comprise of two types; terrain blocks, which make the actual terrain of your level, and terrain objects which are for decorational purposes. You do not have an endless supply of terrain objects, 64 is the maximum, so use your quota wisely.

As you scroll through the objects they are visually displayed on the left. Above that display is further information (3) telling you what height this terrain block can vary between. When you place the terrain the height meter bar (4) to the right will tell you at what height the block is you are placing. To alter the height just keep re-assigning that terrain with the “x” button. One you have placed the terrain for that square move the red cursor square to your next space and choose which tile and at what height you want next.

In the terrain editor you can change your view, zoom in and out, and change to the wireframe view (by holding L1 in combination with other buttons). You should now of created your terrain… on to adding some characters.

Not far to go now. You should now have a completed terrain, but without any enemies – except those preplaced by the initial mission setting. We will now look at the Character Editor. We use this to place enemies and set there paths. You also use it to set other character and special document positions.

Making your first mission – The Character Editor

The maximum number of enemies you can place in your terrain is 20. I would recommend not being tempted to use that many as many strange things can occur (see Tips & Tricks). To place an enemy press START. This toggles you between the Terrain and Character Editor. In the same way as the terrain editor select which enemy you wish to position and press “x” to place.

Once you have placed an enemy you need to specify a route. If no route is specified then the enemy will randomly rotate between the 4 directions on the spot. To open up the route menu press R1, note you need to have the red active square cursor on your enemy.
To define a path use the direction arrow to move the blue arrow. The blue arrow displays which way the character is facing. You can add different length pauses to your characters routes. Each character path can contain up to 160 squares of movement, though I would suggest keeping patrol areas relatively small and simple.

Note that you cannot place guards on slopes and they can only be traversed if the character goes up and down a slope, not across it.

Now all that remains is for you to test your mission. If you press SELECT a menu will pop up where you can save and test your mission. Does the mission play and look alright? Is there areas for improvement? When you are happy with your mission complete a final save and set a password. Now you can let your friends try your new creation and maybe send it for submission to the search engine. For more advanced mission ideas see the Tips & Tricks section.

Washed Ashore

Written by Komov & Chris

Objective: Steal
Boss: Kagami

The level begins with Lord Gohda standing in front of you. Jump onto the ledge on your left, then move forward beyond the wooden crates. Keep moving along the null space, then follow the ledge on the left until you see the front of the ship in the distance. Beware – there is a crow ninja with scythes patrolling below the edge and a crow ninja with sword patrolling at the front.

Take the sword ninja out, then go to the very end of the bow. From here, jump to the ground on the left. Continue along the null space until you reach the front of the next ship. Climb it using the grappling hook, be sure not to let the kunoichi on the left spot you. Next jump to the ground beyond. Again, run along the null space, until you finally reach the corner of the map.

Take the left turn, still following the black space. Don’t let the innocent nearby spot you if you want to prove your abilities of being invisible. Go to the higher ground and make a jump to the next high area, avoiding the trapdoors that are ahead below. Rush and crouch behind the raised edge and observe the kunoichi patrolling nearby ahead of you.

After eliminating her at a good opportunity, follow the null space once again until you see the secret message on a small wooden platform below. Go for it, but be careful because there is a pitfall nearby below. After you take it, go back to Lord Gohda following the same way from which you came. It is a good idea to use the coloured rice to mark your way to the secret message. By that way you will prevent yourself of getting lost when you make your way back.
